I’ve found an E420 and I quite like the idea of it.

Kinja'd!!!

I used to have a W124 clock on my desk, got it from a junkyard E320 and of course it still worked.

I like them, the 500E (pictured) drinks gas, but the 400 should be better. They are the first of the modern Merc era and I would like one but I have a w123 so I am good for forever basically.

But will the rest of the car?

Yeah you’re set for life. Wikipedia says combined mileage is 19.9 mpg US with the 4.2. I’m surprised.

I believe they were very well engineered. The car I pulled the clock from was a 1994 and had 302k on it, when I pulled the clock in 2008. It was also before they went to biodegradable wiring.

My Merc mechanic had a 500 for me to drive one day when I waited for him to do a quick service, I did a bunch of stuff and blew a quarter tank much quicker than I thought! I didn’t hoon it either, I mean I checked out the acceleration a bit on the highway but nothing unusual. I do like them, I have to say I liked it a lot better than the 5 series BMW he gave me one time. I go to him because he is an honest expert who worked for Mercedes... and I get random cars to drive for the day. I think he flips cars.

gotcha. I know the I6 ones are pretty solid.

I don’t think the V8s were bad either. However, I don’t have any direct experience with German cars of that vintage.

It’s one of the last “real” Mercedes. So it’s got that going for it, but as with Mercs of that vintage, pretty much everything that is electric in normal cars is powered by vacuum in these. Miles of vacuum lines that will crack and develop small leaks.

It’s totally possible that the odometer will quit working around 320,000 miles. Like mine did, quite a few years ago.

Also, the seats are nothing spectacular, but are possible to drive 16 hours in within a 24 hour period and not emerge a cripple. That’s probably a pretty good endorsement.

It’s a ‘94 though. I believe it’s post hydraulic but pre biodegradable wiring.

Are there aftermarket kits to swap stuff to electric?

I have no experience with them except driving a 300E around a parking garage. But a friend of mine had an imported 5 speed 230TE for a while and it’s still one of his favourite cars he’s ever had.

Also when I finally got to the end of a very rocky and steep road to a lake that popped two tires on my Blazer, there was a 400E at the top. So apparently they’re good off-roaders

MityVacs (or equivalent) are a must with W124 and older Mercs, due to the vacuum lines controlling literally everything.

The plus side however, is with the 300D, it is possible to make the darn thing run after an EMP blast, as the whole thing is vacuum controlled (Darn ALDA) with a mechanical injection pump. You may not be so lucky with a 400E.

RamblinRover has an 87 300D with God knows how many miles on it at this point.

I intensely fantastically wholeheartedly love these things.

Does that help?
